Mayday: short political comedies

Brass Works Theatre’s pre- election satirical show takes the stage in Tower Lane, Warmley, on Friday, 1 and Saturday, 2 May.

Mayday marks the final weekend of political campaigning ahead of this year’s general election on 7 May with a series of short political comedies by local writers.

Southwest Scriptwriters has a strong showing in the Mayday mix with the show featuring scripts by Bruce Fellows, Tim Massey, Brian Weaving and Stephanie Weston alongside some spoof song lyrics by Adrian Harris. The work from the group is complemented by further scrpis from Joe Ledbury and Miranda Walker.

In a packed programme, Mayday promises Suffragettes for the TOWIE (The Only Way is Essex) generation, MPs in their pants, a celestial focus group and a karaoke sing-off between Cameron and Clegg.

Brian strikes again at MSF

Following success in previous years, Brian Weaving has scored again with several creative writing prizes at the Mid Somerset Festival.

This year Brian scooped awards in the senior Monologue and Haiku classes, and won the Evelyn Sandford Senior Literary Trophy and the MSF Poetry Prize, netting him a new set of silverware for his mantlepiece.

Congratulations to Brian on his consistent success at the Festival!

In addition to his MSF success, Liskeard-based Sterts Theatre has recorded Brian’s play Going, Going… — developed with Southwest Scriptwriters.

The IMDb Script to Screen Award 2015

Bath Film Festival is working again with the Internet Movie Database (IMDb) to offer the above award open to anyone interested in producing a short film.

To enter, submit your ten-minute script for the award by Saturday, 9 May. Creative writing staff at Bath Spa University will read the entries and choose five to be performed by the university’s drama students before a panel of judges and an audience. The panel and audience will vote on the best script, and the winner will receive £5000 plus support with equipment to produce it. Bath Film Festival will screen the short film at next year’s event, and ensure that it also reaches a wider audience.
