We’re starting our last season of six meetings before breaking for the summer this Tuesday, 15 June. All of the following are happening at the Bristol Old Vic, 36 King Street, Bristol, BS1 4DZ, but watch out for the room changes in the schedule. Ask at the reception desk on the right of the theatre’s entrance lobby for directions. Everyone attending meetings pays £1.

Don’t forget that you can also find a list of all our upcoming events on the Diary page of our website and check the date, time and location of our next meeting on the site’s home page in the panel on the right below the slideshow.

Tuesday, 15 June at 7.30pm in the Basement: One Bad Apple by Suzanna Stanbury
We’re starting the season with a reading of a submission for the Southwest Scriptwriters slot in Theatre West’s autumn season (see below): Carole and Don have been married for decades, he lives his life and she lives hers. He has an allotment and she is well looked after. One day Don goes missing and Carole goes to find him. She encounters Malcolm, Don’s next plot neighbour, and they embark on a journey of discovery together.

Tuesday, 22 June at 7.30pm in the Macready Room: Open Workshop

Tuesday, 29 June at 7.30pm in the Macready Room: Crossing the Line by Kate Stonham
A reading of Kate’s 45-minute radio play: Retired Liverpudlian cleaner Mavis Turner fails to be moved by a surprise invitation to join an upmarket cruise across the Indian Ocean. She’s not sure what’s worse — enforced mingling with the ruling classes she once had to bust a gut for, or the prospect of spending two weeks in a cramped twin cabin with her annoying, absent daughter. But as the MV Jupitus steams slowly south towards the Equator, something deeper than the ocean itself starts to awaken in Mavis — an awakening that becomes more urgent as the ship is obliged to change course. Once you’ve ‘crossed the line’, there’s no going back.

Scripts for Theatre West’s autumn season

Many thanks to everyone who’s emailed to say that they’re planning to submit a one-act play for a possible fortnight’s production in the Southwest Scriptwriters slot in Theatre West’s autumn season at the Alma Tavern Theatre this year. I’ll be emailing all 25 of you who’ve expressed an interest with instructions on how to submit soon.

We have three open workshop meetings coming up at which you can get feedback to help develop your script (the season’s fourth open workshop session falls on the submission deadline).

Congratulations to group members Gill Kirk, Steve Lambert and Heather Lister who all had short plays featured in The Push series of rehearsed readings at the Ustinov Theatre in Bath on 2 June.

Initiated by the Ustinov’s Writers’ Forum, The Push challenged writers to push themselves: ‘Write in a new way, from a new perspective, challenge yourself with content and form, and sit outside your comfort zone.’

This writing gauntlet produced an evening’s entertainment comprising Gill’s Everyone Loves a Story, Steve’s Creation and Heather’s O Crewel World! with Man Diving by Tom Phillips. Group committee member Adrian Harris appeared in Man Diving and Everyone Loves a Story.

Script Space III

A reminder that the third series of Script Space rehearsed readings continues at the Tobacco Factory at 1.30pm on Sundays 20 and 27 June.

The 20 June show features Dry Spell by Phil Booth, while 27 June presents four short plays including The Most Beautiful Man in the World by Southwest Scriptwriter Katherine Mitchell.
