Tuesday, 29 October at 7.30pm: Allotment by Tim Massey

Following the collapse of the worldwide financial system, the military has seized control of essential supplies in the cities, while the people have to cope with severe shortages and the spread of disease.

An urban refugee is trapped when he finds his way to a rural allotment where an enterprising group of former university staff and students is scratching the beginnings of a living from the land.

A standoff with the newcomer presents the incipient smallholders with some tough economic choices.

An earlier draft of Tim’s play, workshopped with Southwest Scriptwriters during our spring season, placed in the top 75 of nearly 800 submissions for the Verity Bargate Award at Soho Theatre recently.

Southwest Scriptwriters in The A-Z of Writing

Work by group members Lissa Carter and Katriel Costello features in Theatre West’s autumn season at the Alma Tavern Theatre this year.

The company’s two-year A-Z of Writing project invited selected writers from around the region to write in response to visiting a place assigned to them at random from a Bristol A to Z map. This process inspired hour-long plays and accompanying, 10-minute ‘Short Trip’ scripts that Theatre West developed for production at the Alma last autumn and this year.

The 2013 season launches next Saturday, 28 September, with a rehearsed reading of Katriel’s play Gorm Heads that predictsafuture in which the government is over-interested in its citizens’ everyday lives.

Lissa’s Short Trip, Home, accompanies Blackout by Mark Shand, playing at the Alma from 26 November until 7 December.

See Som’at at Brass Works Theatre

South Gloucestershire’s new theatre is back in action next month with RumDoxy Theatre Company‘s fast-paced re-rendering of Much Ado About Nothing, Much Ado About Som’at.

The young company’s ‘Shakespeare on a Shoestring’ show sets the popular comedy in a world inspired by the 1980s. Its four-strong,all-female cast retells the tale of reluctant lovers Beatrice and Benedick whose friends conspire to unite them, while evil Don John plots to wreck the wedding of sweethearts Hero and Claudio.

Much Ado About Som’at — playing at 7.30pm nightly from 15-19 October with a 2.30pm matinee on 19 October – promises energetic performances with a sprinkling of ribaldry and an injection of dance.

Brass Works Theatre was founded by its Artistic Director (and Southwest Scriptwriters committee member) Adrian Harris. Theinnovative venue recently won further recognition from South Gloucestershire Council, which awarded the theatre a grant of £1710.00 for additional sound and lighting equipment.
