Season’s greetings from Southwest Scriptwriters

Wishing you a merry and bright Yuletide with plenty of scriptwriting success in 2020.

Welcome to a festive edition looking forward to getting Southwest Scriptwriters’ fourth decade underway with a duo of meetings in January.

Both of our New Year sessions are in the Coopers’ Loft at Bristol Old Vic, King Street, BS1 4ED. Sign in at reception opposite the bar between the box office and the main entrance, and take the lift to the Coopers’ Loft on the top floor — please ask theatre staff if you need directions. Everyone attending pays £2.

Our January dates are below and on our What’s on page for quick reference. We hope to confirm some February sessions soon — details in our next newsletter.

Tuesday, 7 January 2020 at 8pm: Open Workshop

First up for 2020 is a couple of shorts by Mitch Hodge centring on Michael, a veteran who wants to take part in a village sporting event, but his brother thinks otherwise…

Steve Lambert will also pitch his idea for a play based on Diane Keaton’s January 2018 Twitter defence of Woody Allen over abuse allegations from his adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow. ‘He is my friend and I still believe him,’ Keaton tweeted. Have traditional ideas about trust and loyalty shifted irrevocably? Can doubt play a useful role in an increasingly judgemental world? How should we react when we may never know the truth?

We expect to have time in this session for work in progress by another writer — please get in touch using our Book a workshop slot form if you have a script extract you’d like to give an early airing in the New Year.

Tuesday, 21 January 2020 at 8pm: Open Workshop

Featuring a full-length play by Caroline Harrington.

Adrian wins Poole Museums writing residency

Group committee member Adrian Harris has been appointed Writer in Residence at Poole Museum in an initiative led by Southampton-based writer development agency Artful Scribe.

Adrian will spend the equivalent of a day a week at Poole Museum from January until December 2020 writing in response to materials in its collection, creating work to show in the exhibition. He also plans to lead workshops drawing on the museum’s content.

Congratulations to Adrian on winning the residency!

Papatango Theatre Company is accepting entries for its annual New Writing Prize until 9pm on Sunday, 2 February 2020.

The company is extending a generous offer of a guaranteed London premiere for the winning script succeeded by a national tour, publication, and related royalties. Papatango will also award the prizewinner a £6500 commission for a follow-up play.

All entrants for the Prize receive feedback on their scripts, so the least you can expect from entering is some notes on your writing.

The Papatango New Writing Prize is open to residents of the UK and Ireland, is free to enter and is judged anonymously.
