A theatrical start to February…

This month starts with a smorgasbord of onstage action featuring members of Southwest Scriptwriters and friends of the group, kicking off with…

Rum & Vodka by Conor McPherson at the Alma Tavern, 3 to 7 February 2009
Long-time Scriptwriters associate, Ed Viney, directs Conor McPherson’s one-man journey through drink and despair in Dublin. After losing his job and being chased from a supermarket by his screaming wife, our hero embarks on a drunken quest to cure his life.

If I Were a Carpenter by Dougie Blaxland at the Rondo Theatre, Bath, 4 to 7 February 2009
Next up this week, Southwest Scriptwriters committee member, Adrian Harris, appears in Provacation’s production of Dougie Blaxland’s black comedy at the Rondo.

A haven of loving support or a cauldron of bubbling tension: what is the real truth about family life in Britain today? If I Were a Carpenter tells the story of three families struggling in their different ways with the pressures of modern urban life.

Bristol Old Vic Writers’ Room Script in Hand, Bristol Old Vic Studio, 6 to 8 February 2009
Many congratulations to group members Peter Kesterton and Shiona Morton whose plays, Painting Snails and Meat and Right, are two of five scripts selected for presentation in Bristol Old Vic Writers’ Room Script In Hand season next weekend.

Meat and Right receives its script-in-hand performance in the Bristol Old Vic Studio on Friday, 6 February, at 7.30pm: Cath and Debs, Ted and Pete. A butcher’s shop and a freezer full of meat. An upcoming wedding and an insatiable desire for a bungalow. Shiona’s play shows just how catastrophic mundane family fall-outs can be.

Painting Snails has its Script In Hand outing in the Studio on Saturday, 7 February at 7.30pm. In Peter’s play, Mandy visits the same tree every day, laying a white flower for her lost son. But when she comes across Callum laying gifts at the same tree, the questions she has lived with for years are finally and explosively answered…

Painting Snails also sees Ed Viney back in action as director.

The other new plays featured in the Script In Hand season are My Green, Your Grey by Sarah Cudden at 2.30pm on Saturday, 6 February, and The Book and the Bit by Edson Burton and Muscle by Tom Wainwright at 2.30 and 7.30pm respectively on Sunday, 8 February.

There will be an opportunity for audiences to discuss the featured plays with their writers and directors following each performance.
