Salt'n'Sauce by Tim Massey

We kick off our final season of 2006 with a final visit to the Alma Tavern theatre to see Theatre West’s production of Tim Massey’s new play Salt’n’Sauce. All other meetings take place in the Macready Room at the Bristol Old Vic. Everyone attending pays £1.

Tuesday, 7 November at 8.30pm: Salt’n’Sauce by Tim Massey
A group visit to the Alma Tavern theatre to see Theatre West’s production of Tim’s play set at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Wannabe playwright, John Lomas, runs up a stellar credit card bill to mount a production of his play on the Fringe. But, with his archrival creaming him at the box office, a megalomaniac director with ulterior motives, and the cast and crew in near revolt, must the show really go on?

Tuesday, 14 November at 7.30pm: Trust Me by Andy Graham
A reading of Andy’s latest stage play. When two brothers fall out over how to look after their increasingly infirm mother, their rift has consequences neither could have predicted. Trust Me is a two-act drama that looks at the care of the elderly, but also at the legacy of a decade of Labour government.

Tuesday, 21 November at 7.30pm: Open Workshop

Tuesday, 28 November at 7.30pm: Breakfast at Gretna by Kevin Cattell
Kevin’s latest script is a bittersweet tale of best friends Jack and Kenton as they head north for a birthday party. But there’s nothing to celebrate by the time they reach the A74.

Tuesday, 5 December at 7.30pm: Southwest Shorts Winners and Christmas Drinks
Our evening starts with a showing of the two winning films from our Southwest Shorts competition earlier this year — The Messenger by Adrian Henderson and Taking the Biscuit by Margaret Crump. Both films are directed by Steve Brown and both are high quality productions, so please come and see them. Following the showings, we’ll repair to Renato’s for Christmas drinks.

Inside Out script-in-hand performances
As mentioned in the last newsletter, we’re delighted that in addition to Steve Hennesy, Mark Breckon and Tim Massey’s success in Theatre West’s ‘Inside Out’ season at the Alma Tavern, two more Southwest Scriptwriters were runners-up — and their scripts are being given rehearsed script-in-hand performance at the Alma Tavern Theatre as follows:

Sunday, 19 November at 5pm: Cowboys and Campers by Shiona Morton
Outdoor girl Wilma and line-dancing Bill have absolutely nothing in common. Oh, except country music. Can Dolly and Kenny weave their magic lovin’ spell? Will Wilma see the beauty in Bill’s fringed Cuban heels and can Bill bear to wear Wilma’s woolly walking socks?

Shiona’s reading is directed by Ed Viney who won a place on Bristol Old Vic Theatre School’s Directors’ Attachment, which started earlier this autumn — congratulations, Ed!

Monday, 20 November at 9pm: Touch by Steve Lambert
A young woman who falls victim to a predatory couple finds herself in a place of absolute darkness. Yet this isn’t a story of good exposed to evil, but what happens when evil is exposed to good.

Teach Yourself Writing a Play by Lesley Bown and Ann Gawthorpe
Congratulations to Lesley Bown and Ann Gawthorpe who have been commissioned by Hodder to write Teach Yourself Writing a Play. It’s due to be published in August next year.

South West Screen Digital Shorts success
Congratulations, too, to Bill Maryon and Liz Banks who are both having shorts produced as part of South West Screen’s Digital Shorts project. Bill is directing his film, The Meeting, himself this autumn. Liz’s film, Hedge Witch, is her second attempt at scriptwriting — she’s normally a documentary film maker. We hope to show both films at a group meeting some time in the New Year.
