We’re starting our final season of meetings of the year this Tuesday with a workshop focussing on material for the Red Cups Revue, an evening of short seasonal scripts by group members that we’re presenting at the Broadmead Arcade branch of Starbucks in mid-December. Watch this space for full details of our pre-Christmas Starbucks show, which I’ll be sending out nearer the time.
All of the following meetings are taking place in the function room upstairs
at the Famous Royal Naval Volunteer pub, 17-18 King Street, BS1 4EE. Ask at the bar when buying a drink if you need directions to the meeting. Everyone attending meetings pays £1. Writing sitcoms, sketches or comic shorts is a notoriously difficult area. Scriptwriters’ Chair Andy Graham looks at the choices involved in creating good comedy: developing characters, structuring story for laughs, pacing and using visual cues. As always, please bring paper and pen for this practical session.

Theatre West’s Writing in the Margins autumn season 2008
So far Theatre West’s annual ten-week autumn programme of new plays at the Alma Tavern Theatre in Clifton has been dominated by work by members of Southwest Scriptwriters. The season opened with Tim Massey’s Bond Girls, followed by Shiona Morton’s play, Shut Up, with Elaine Eveleigh and Helen Bradbury having their first full productions with Bittern End and Loose Connections as part of Theatre West’s 4 x 15-Minutes show last month.
The season’s current production is long-time Scriptwriters associate Steve Hennessy’s Cave — an engaging script centring on the Ancient Greek playwright Euripides’ writer’s block, which makes some sharp satirical points about writing for the modern theatre. Cave is at the Alma until next Saturday, 8 November.
Theatre West’s final production this autumn is Metal Remains by Natalie McGrath, which debuts on Tuesday, 11 November, running until Saturday, 22. The company is also presenting rehearsed readings of two one-act plays that were commissioned for this autumn’s season but didn’t make the final line-up. You can see the script-in-hand performances of Jellied Eels by Jimmy Whiteaker and The Distance by Craig Norman at the Alma from 6pm on Sunday, 16 November.
Script In Hand: Rehearsed Readings at the Bristol Old Vic
Bristol Old Vic is looking for five new and previously unperformed scripts by South West based writers for rehearsed readings in February 2009.
Chosen scripts will receive three days development in a rehearsal room with a director and actors leading to a script-in-hand reading in the Bristol Old Vic Studio with an audience.
During the first week in February the theatre will be given over exclusively to a company of writers, directors and performers for the development and performance of five new pieces of work.
The final script choice will be made by a panel of experienced producers and directors from Aardman Animations, BBC and Theatre West.
Scripts can be one act or full-length but please not over one and a half hours long.
