Robert Louis Stevenson's Kidnapped

This Tuesday, 12 November, sees our last regular meeting of 2013 – the end of the year is a hectic time at Watershed, and Waterside 1 is booked solidly on Tuesday evenings for the remainder of this month and into next.

Tuesday’s meeting is taking place as usual in W1 at Watershed, 1 Canon’s Road, Harbourside, Bristol, BS1 5TX. Ask at the box office if you need directions to the meeting. Everyone attending pays£1.

Tuesday, 12 November at 7.30pm: Open Workshop

The last chance of the year to get feedback from the group on your work in progress.

Dates for your diary

While we’re drawing 2013 to an early close this week, we’ve already got dates lined up for our first set of meetings in 2014. We’ll be back at Watershed on the following Tuesday evenings next year:

21 January 2014
4 February
11 February
18 February

Turning ‘ages project

Following the success of our Museum Pieces and Living Local writing-in-response projects in 2011, we’re pleased to announce a similar project to kick-start 2014…

Local artist (and friend of Southwest Scriptwriters) Elaine Robinson has completed a sculptural work titled ‘Turning ‘ages’.. It features books and book-related objects and artefacts such as dedications and inscriptions — plenty to spark writers’ imaginations.

Elaine would like to expand the piece by inviting you to write brief (ten-minute/1800-word) monologues or duologues inspired by it and for performince alongside it. She expects to display Turning ‘ages in the upcoming open exhibition at The Royal West of England Academy, Quaker’s Road, Clifton, Bristol, BS8 1PXI, from 24 January until the end of November – the Academy is due to make the final selection for the exhibition this week, and the inclusion of Elaine’s work will be confired then.

Assuming Elaine’s work is included, the Academy exhibition will be your chance to see Turning ‘ages and choose aspects of it on which to base your monologues or duologues. Write your performance piece and bring it aklong to one of our meetings in January or February for feedback. The plan is to set up further showings of Turning ‘ages later next year — Bristol Central Library has expressed interest in showing it — and we’ll present performances of selected pieces by Southwest Scriptwriters alongside the artwork at these exhibitions.

Lissa’s Short Trip at the Alma

Theatre West’s second A to Z of Writing autumn season concludes at the Alma Tavern Theatre in the first week of December (Tuesday, 3 to Saturday, 7) when Lissa Carter’s ‘Short Trip’ Home features as a ten-minute comoanion piece to Mark Shand’s hour-long play, Blackout.

Kidnapped at Brass Works Theatre

Robert Louis Stevenson's Kidnapped

Brass Works Theatre’s Christmas 2013 production reunites the writer-director team behind The Mystery of the Hound of the Baskervilles, last year’s highly successful seasonal outing at South Gloucestershire’s new venue.

This year, Bruce Fellows has adapted Robert Louis Stevenson’s Scottish seafaring story Kidnapped for the Brass Works stage — members at our meeting on 22 Octiber were treated to a preview of the first 30 minutes of the adventure.

Fellow Southwest Scriptwriter (and Brass Works Theatre’s founder and Artistic Director) Adrian Harris takes the helm again as director of the show, which premieres on 17 December and closes on 11 January.
