We’re rounding off 2014 with another four Tuesday evenings at Watershed, 1 Canon’s Road, Harbourside, Bristol, BS1 5TX. Our meetings this time are on consecutive weeks, so there are no breaks in our prorgramme until we finish for the festive season on 9 December. On 2 December, though, we’re meeting in Waterside 2 next door to our regular venue, Waterside 1, where we’ll be for the rest of the following dates.

Bruce is retelling another Arthur Conan Doyle story with a twist for this year’s seasonal show at Brass Works Theatre. Come and give him some pointers on an extract of his adaptation tonight, and see below for more news of BWT’s festive production.

Bruce brings Broadbent to BOV Basement
In the current stage of its peripatetic autumn season, Theatre West is presenting Bruce Fellows’ short play Broadbent in Bristol Old Vic‘s Basemen.
Bruce’s play precedes solo[solo] by Samuel E Taylor, the latest in Theatre West’s One Day series inspired by the events of 1 October 2013.
See both plays at 8.15pm on Tuesday to Saturday until 22 November.

Deep Pit done and Carbuncle to come at Brass Works Theatre
Brass Works Theatre in Warmley scored another success with its production of Deep Pit by Adrian Harris in late October and earlier this month.
Bristol 24/7‘s Steve Wright praised Adrian’s ‘fine new play’ — developed with Southwest Scriptwriters during 2009 — for its ‘lyrical script peppered with black comedy, a fine and committed cast, and an attention to detail that brings to vivid life a little-understood time and place in local history.’
The theatre itself won acclaim from The Stage — following a nomination for the entertainment industry newspaper’s Fringe Theatre of the Year Award in January — for its performance space, which ‘has morphed from a bare store room above an industrial heritage museum on the outskirts of Bristol, into a proper theatre with excellent computer-controlled lighting and sound systems.’
Many thanks to everyone from Southwest Scriptwriters who came to see Deep Pit during its three-week run, which attracted a total audience of more than 500.
This New Year, BWT is building on the success of its previous two seasonal shows for which Bruce Fellows has adapted a classic novel. Bruce is drawing again on the work of Arthur Conan Doyle for the 2014-2015 production with Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle.
As in 2012-2013’s The Mystery of the Hound of the Baskervilles, Carbuncle stars a female Sherlock who cross-dresses as a man to carry out her sleuthing, but also does a music hall turn as (apparently) a female impersonator — an alternative career that meets with the disapproval of her trusty sidekick, Watson.
The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle begins when Holmes is called at Christmastime to investigate the appearance of the eponymous jewel in the throat of a goose.
