Southwest Scriptwriters’ season of mists and mellow fruitfulness starts next Tuesday, 19 September, with the first in a quartet of monthly meetings at Bristol Old Vic, King Street, Bristol, BS1 4ED confirmed before Christmas.

We’ve scheduled all four to take place in the Rehearsal Room at the theatre complex with the usual caveat that the venue may change with little notice, so please check our What’s on page for the meeting place before setting out — we’ll also announce last-minute changes on our social media feeds, but you can count on our What’s on page for the latest location information!

Ask at the Stage Door entrance off Queen Charlotte Street (map) for directions to the Rehearsal Room when signing-in. Everyone attending a meeting pays £2.

Tuesday, 19 September at 8pm: Stocking Fillers by Scott Wilson

A complete reading of Scott’s seasonal screenplay:

‘Three Santas aren’t on any festive card: they’re delivery men first and foremost — an angelic version of Parcelforce working tirelessly for ‘the man’ (who is, in this case, Jesus Christ).
‘Our Santa dreams of a time without Christmas. If he keeps his head down and doesn’t accidentally kidnap a child, maybe — just maybe — he can earn his freedom.’

Work for meetings on 10 October, 7 November and 12 December

Email us using our ‘Book a workshop slot’ form to grab some time in one of our three remaining meetings this year for feedback on your work in progress.

Night of the Shorts at The Cube

A 15-minute extract of Clare Finnimore’s radio docudrama, Shared Spaces: Oliver’s Story — on which we offered feedback at last month’s group meeting — features in the Night of the Shorts showcase at Bristol’s Cube cinema from 7pm on Sunday, 8 October.

‘The Bath Spa MA scriptwriting students present Night of the Shorts, exposing their sea legs in a night of short film, theatre and radio. Join them as they cast off into the big bad world.’

Night of the Shorts is free to attend, but please reserve your ticket by entering your name and email address on the booking page of the event’s website.

Submissions Window open at Bush Theatre

London’s Bush Theatre — responsible for providing an early fillip to the careers of numerous playwrights including that of Southwest Scriptwriters’ first Honorary President, Catherine Johnson — is accepting submissions of plays from writers who are not represented by a literary agent until 12pm on 31 October.

The Bush is:

‘…looking for plays with contemporary bite, which seek to reflect our contemporary culture and ask sharp questions of what it means to be living now. We want to house a plurality of voices, seek worlds that are under represented and characters who are drawn from the world outside our theatre.’

The theatre’s Playwriting Department recommends that you familiarise yourself with its Script Submissions Window guidelines before submitting your play online.
