From the Farm to the Front out on 28 October

Group committee member Adrian Harris publishes his play script From the Farm to the Front on 28 October.

Adrian wrote the play as part of a Heritage Lottery Fund financed project to commemorate the centenary of The Battle of the Somme (1 July 1916 – 18 November 1916). He developed story ideas through a series of workshops in South Gloucestershire secondary schools, and will distribute multiple copies of the published text to the schools as an enduring teaching resource.

From the Farm to the Front is a dramatic and touching play following the lives of the Powell family from Westerleigh, South Gloucestershire, to the bloody fields of the Somme. […] This poignant window on lives affected by the First World War uses letters and research from real lives explored by the author. This serves as a tremendous resource when teaching secondary age students about the tragedy of war both at home and in battle.’

The project is Brass Works Theatre’s first since leaving its original base in Tower Lane, Warmley, last autumn, and has seen the company partnering with South Gloucestershire Council, several local heritage centres and the University of the West of England as well as the schools in which it delivered the workshops., Brass Works Theatre plans to return to producing plays in South Gloucestershire venues next year.

Introduce Yourself at Finborough Theatre

If you’ve not previously submitted a script to London’s Finborough Theatre, its annual opportunity to make yourself known to its Literary Team starts on Sunday, 8 October.

Running alongside the theatre’s Vibrant Festival, its Introduce Yourself initiative aims to ensure that its work is accessible to all. As part of an unsubsidised theatre, the Finborough’s Literary Team usually has has insufficient resources to offer feedback on script submissions, but promises to offer at least a paragraph in response to those it receives for Introduce Yourself. The initiative attracted more than 200 entries last time, one of which progressed to a full production at Finborough Theatre.

To make your introduction, email either an unperformed short play or 20 pages of an unperformed full-length one plus a synopsis and few details about yourself to the Finborough between 8 and 31 October. Find the email address and full submission details here.

Window still open at The Bush

As reported in last month’s newsletter, The Bush Theatre’s annual submissions window is open until 12pm on 31 October.

One of the UK’s foremost producers of new plays, The Bush is seeking scripts ‘with contemporary bite, which seek to reflect our contemporary culture and ask sharp questions of what it means to be living now.’

If you have something that meets this brief, find full submission details here.
